Concept:
"Ananse Ntentan" is a micro residency rooted in Ghanaian folklore, inspired by the legendary Ananse the Spider, the guardian of all stories. Known for his cunning and wisdom, Ananse's intricate web designs serve as a metaphor for the complexities of life. This residency draws upon the symbolism of Ananse’s web to create unique mixed media art pieces that reflect the depth and intricacies of the human experience.
Artistic Vision:
The works produced during this residency will explore the intersections of tradition, sustainability, and migration. Utilizing repurposed materials, the art will echo the lessons of Ananse's tales, emphasizing the importance of history and the necessity of sustainability. Each piece will be a vibrant tapestry of colors, shapes, and designs inspired by Ananse's web, symbolizing the interconnectedness of life’s challenges and triumphs.
Focus on Kayayo:
The canvas for this residency is the "Kayayo," young female head porters who migrate from the northern regions of Ghana, often due to the severe impacts of the climate crisis, to the south in search of economic opportunities. Their stories of resilience and power are at the heart of this residency. By intertwining their migration narratives with sustainable fashion, the residency will reclaim and celebrate their experiences, highlighting the nuanced realities of migration through art.
Objectives:
This micro residency aims to foster a deeper understanding of Black narratives surrounding life’s complexities and migration. By engaging with the local community and visitors, the residency will raise awareness about the intersections of culture, sustainability, and social justice. Through the lens of Ananse’s wisdom, the residency will offer a platform for storytelling that bridges history, art, and environmental consciousness.
